Poland Adoption

About Poland

Poland is one of Europe’s largest countries, with 14 regions and a population of over 38 million, 2 million of which are in its capital city, Warsaw. With beautiful landscapes, including coastline along the Baltic Sea, Poland is an excellent place for tourists, especially those with an interest in world history and architecture. It boasts an excellent economy, a friendly population, and most importantly, great care for its underprivileged children.

Due to its excellent economy and political stability, Poland’s social welfare system provides great care to those in need, including orphaned children. Many Polish families adopt Polish orphans, but there are still some that remain in foster care or institutions that await their forever families from other European countries, Canada and the U.S. For the past two years, U.S. families have adopted 50 beautiful Polish children each year. Poland is a party to the Hague Treaty on International adoptions.

Children of All Nations is directly accredited by the Polish Adoption Authority to place Polish children with American families.

If you would like more information about our program, our specialized adoption consultants are standing by to help! To have your questions answered, call us today at 512.615.1515 or email us at info@childrenofallnations.com.

Children Available for Polish Adoption

Children from Poland are Caucasian, typically with brown or blonde hair and light eyes. Polish children are placed in orphanages or foster care due to voluntary or involuntary relinquishment by their parents, or the death of their parents. In some cases, parents are simply not able to care for their children due to disability or illness. Most children are cared for in orphanages, which provide excellent care, as well as by foster families.

When adopting from Poland, consider you will be adopting the following:

  • Boys and girls 1 to 16 years old
  • Children with special needs and older children
  • Two or more siblings at one time

Families considering adopting a child will have access to child's background information before travel. In most cases, additional information is available upon request.

Poland Adoption Requirements

In addition to the USCIS eligibility requirements for prospective adoptive parent(s), Poland has the following requirements, which vary slightly by Custody Center. If you feel you are not eligible to adopt from Poland, or you are unsure, we may be able to work with you. Please contact us for a free case-by-case consultation.

  • Citizenship: One parent must be a U.S. citizen
  • Age: Adoptive parents must be at least 25 years of age. Parents can be 40 years older than the adoptive child. In special cases, one parent may be more than 40 years older.
  • Marriage Status: Single women, as well as married couples are eligible to adopt. Married couples should be married at least 3 years. There are no prior divorce restrictions.
  • Income: There is no minimum income required. However, you need to meet the income requirements provided by USCIS for the child to immigrate.
  • Medical: If you take prescription medicine or have a medical condition, please contact our adoption consultant to determine your eligibility.
  • Children in Home: There is no limit to the number of children currently in the home. However, some Custody Centers give preference to families with no other children in the home.

Poland’s adoption eligibility requirements are subject to change per Poland’s adoption laws. CAN updates these guidelines as necessary.

Poland Adoption Process

1. Application and Approval
To adopt a child from Poland, please complete our agency application. For your convenience, you may access the application on our website. We will review your eligibility to adopt from Poland based on the guidelines of Poland’s adoption eligibility requirements once we have received your application. Then, your application will be forwarded to our accredited Polish partner agency for review. If approved, we will provide you with our agency contract and partner agency contract that outlines our fees, services and important information regarding the international adoption process. Upon receipt of your signed contract, CAN will start to provide you placement services for a child from Poland.

2. The Paper Chase
Once your agency contract is in place, it is time to get started on your dossier. This will include a home study to assess your readiness for international adoption from Poland and help prepare you for adoptive parenthood, filing with USCIS for international adoption approval, and gathering your dossier documents. These dossier documents must go through the appropriate notarization and authentication processes. CAN offers a complete Dossier Preparation Service to ease your international adoption and give you peace of mind.

To ensure that prospective adoptive parents are prepared for their international adoption journey, our agency requires that parents complete 10 hours of adoption training as mandated by the Hague Convention. To satisfy these hours, we have developed an online parent training program that we are proud to include in CAN’s service plan. For an overview of the program, please click here. Please contact your Adoption Consultant at CAN for more information about international adoption from Poland.

3. Identifying a Child
Your dossier will be sent to Poland and translated and legalized, which will take 2-4 weeks. Then, it will be submitted for the Custody Center(s) to approve and await a referral. Although timelines are hard to predict, if you are adopting a child with special medical needs, an older child, or a sibling group, you may receive a referral within 1-6 months. Adoption of younger or healthy children may result in a wait of 6-12 months for a referral. Most children adopted from Poland, especially those that are under 8 years old, are sibling groups.

4. Picking up Your Child(ren)
After you are matched with a child or sibling group, you will plan your first trip to Poland to meet your child and spend 2-3 weeks bonding with them, depending on what amount of time the judge issues. At the end of the bonding period, the court process will take place in the district the child is from. Both parents are required to travel to Poland to attend the court hearing and must be present for at least part of the bonding period. You will then return home for about 2-3 weeks during the adoption finalization period, although you can also stay in Poland if you wish. The second trip should take about one week or less while you are finalizing the visa process and to bring your child home.

5. Post Adoption Requirements
Poland requires 3 post-adoption reports at 6, 12, and 18 months after the adoption is finalized. These reports demonstrate to the Polish government and Custody Centers the benefits of international adoption for their children.
