Library of Love
Literacy is the foundation for education and good quality of life, and it is a basic human right deserved by all. It is essential for abolishing poverty, reducing child mortality, achieving sustainable development, controlling population growth and achieving gender equality. Yet worldwide statistics show 1 in 5 adults is illiterate along with 72 million children who are out of school.
As a means of bridging that gap for future generations, Library of Love is reaching out to orphaned children worldwide – those most susceptible to the risks of illiteracy – as a means of giving them the tools necessary for a more certain future.
Library of Love is a humanitarian aid project dedicated to building libraries in orphanages throughout the world. Many of the over 140 million orphans worldwide will not have the good fortune of being adopted by a family; and additionally, many of these children will probably never have the opportunity to attend schools with teachers, books, learning tools and computers. Library of Love aims to provide these children with access to some of the same educational tools available to children in the United States in the hopes of building a better foundation for their future.
Our goal for 2010 is to build two libraries: one library located in an orphanage in Yun Cheng, China and another library located in an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The estimated costs for building these libraries totals $30,000 per library. It is our organization’s desire that this project be a long-term investment that will grow and expand to every country we serve through international adoption.
