About Mexico
Mexico is a unique country where the past intersects the present. Its history is rich with ancient civilizations, diverse cultures, exquisite landscapes and breathtaking art. Mexico is a Spanish speaking country with approximately 109 million inhabitants. The terrain varies from tropical rainforests to deserts.
The Mexico adoption system is governed by the Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (known as DIF). Translated, this is the State System for the Full Development of the Family. DIF oversees all domestic and international adoptions. DIF is based in Mexico’s capital, Mexico City; however, the adoption system also includes a system of 31 adoption authorities – one in each Mexican State. Each of these states has its own civil code and adoption laws that govern the international adoption process.
Like the United States, Mexico is a Hague Convention Country. Over the last 11 years, Mexico and the U.S. have consistently worked together to help children from Mexico find their forever family though reliable international adoption programs. Because Mexico’s culture is so familiar to Americans, adoptive parent(s) find that the bonding process with Mexican children comes naturally and easily.
