Nepal is located in Southern Asia and is landlocked between China and India. Nepal is well known for its mountainous region and contains eight of the ten world’s highest mountains, including the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. Nepal is also the world’s youngest republic. After years of monarchist rule, a federal democratic republic was established on May 28, 2008, and Nepal’s first President, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav was sworn into office on July 23, 2008.
Nepalese culture is diverse, reflecting different ethnic origins of the people. The majority of people in Nepal follow the Hindu religion. The Nepali year begins in mid-April and is divided into 12 months. Saturday is the official weekly holiday. Main annual holidays include Prithvi Jayanti (January 11), Martyr’s Day (February 18), and a mix of Hindu and Buddhist festivals.
The central adoption authority of Nepal is the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare located in Kathmandu, Nepal. Though Nepal is NOT yet officially a Hague Convention Country, Nepal signed the agreement on April 28, 2009 to be implemented in the future.
